Steamy Lit Con: A Celebration of Diversity and The Spice of Life

The second annual Steamy Lit Con kicked off with a bang, drawing romance lovers from all corners of the globe to celebrate a diverse and vibrant array of authors, books, and readers. Held in Anaheim, CA, the event boasted an impressive lineup of authors who set the stage for a weekend of excitement, heart-pounding romance, and unforgettable moments. The mastermind behind the event, affectionately known as Mel (@bookrecsbymel), started the event last year to highlight diverse writers in the space. She and her team worked tirelessly to bring about a truly one of one experience that readers are sure to talk about all year long!

Attendees were treated to a packed schedule filled with panel discussions, book signings, and clever fan experiences. It was heartwarming to see readers coming together to share their love for the genre. The event is undoubtedly a highlight in the romance community’s calendar, and the energy from day one was nothing short of electric.

Among the standout authors in attendance were the legends, Beverly Jenkins and Nalini Sing, both authors, fans have had little excess. Other authors included Ali Hazelwood, Christina Lauren, Lauren Ho, Susun Lee, Xio Axelrod, Jayci Lee, Mia Hopkins, Justinian Huang, Angela Montoya, Farrah Rochon, Alyss Cole, and Kennedy Ryan. These authors have been produced some of the most compelling romances of the year.

The weekend promises even more excitement with panels featuring discussions on diversity in romance, and exclusive sneak peeks of upcoming releases. Steamy Lit Con is a testament to the power of romance novels in bringing people together, breaking boundaries, and celebrating love in all its forms.

The story follows Gianna "Gigi" Ricci, who unexpectedly finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation after stumbling upon her favorite teacher, Mr. Ford, dead in his classroom. With the help of her high school Mystery Club friends, including best friend Sean and longtime crush Mari, Gigi dives into the dangerous quest to uncover the truth.

The California African American Museum (CAAM) celebrated the opening of their new exhibit "Black California Dreamin’ curated by Alison R. Jefferson by featuring a compelling performance from Poet Yazmin Monet Watkins, who is also an acclaimed comedian, actress, educator, and organizer.

Watkins poetry explored themes of water, beach, grief and life in Southern California. She read selections from her forthcoming debut poetry collection, "A Vessel Born to Float," that resonated as a love letter to every version of her former self.

Tuesday, Zibby’s Bookstore hosted the highly anticipated launch of Katherine Vaz’s latest novel, “Above the Salt”. The event drew a captivated audience eager to hear Vaz discuss her sweeping love story set against the backdrop of Civil-War America. Moderated by Laura Warrell, the evening unfolded with a rich dialogue about the novel's themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience amidst the turbulence of historical conflict.

“Above the Salt” follows the harrowing journey of Portuguese refugees John Alves and Mary Freitas, whose budding romance is thwarted by religious violence in Madeira. Separated by circumstance and reunited years later in mid-nineteenth-century Illinois, their love story is a testament to enduring passion and the complex choices shaped by war and loyalty. Vaz’s poignant narrative brings to life their struggles and triumphs, set against the historically rich backdrop of Jacksonville's school for the deaf and the home of rising politician Abraham Lincoln.


Vaz, a Portuguese-American, shared an excerpt from the novel which briefly conveyed her characters John and Mary and the depth of their love. The event concluded with a lengthy Q&A and a book signing.
