"Black California Dreamin’: A Night of Poetry and Reflection at CAAM"

“Black California Dreamin’” at CAAM

The California African American Museum (CAAM) celebrated the opening of their new exhibit "Black California Dreamin’ curated by Alison R. Jefferson by featuring a compelling performance from Poet Yazmin Monet Watkins, who is also an acclaimed comedian, actress, educator, and organizer.

Watkins poetry explored themes of water, beach, grief and life in Southern California. She read selections from her forthcoming debut poetry collection, "A Vessel Born to Float," that resonated as a love letter to every version of her former self.

"Black California Dreamin’" is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Black community in Southern California, emphasizing the significance of recreation and relaxation in relation to black life.

Watkins Book "A Vessel Born to Float” is out September 24, 2024, and is available for pre-order now.

"Black California Dreamin’" is on exhibit now!
